Update – January 17, 2012

Nik’s Chicks is only a time and place to meet & a program to follow.  I cannot join you on every run.  If you are new to exercising, it is advisable to have a doctor’s OK prior to beginning. Please  sign my waiver (in “About”) and fill out the contact info sheet prior to your first run.

Quote of the Week:

If we write our dreams and goals down, we dramatically increase our odds of realization. If we share them with others, they become potent and alive.

Hello ladies, here is the latest news from the “nest”!

Weekly Chirp: There is something about January that always reeks of fresh starts.  The gym is packed these days! Although I don’t usually make super specific resolutions, I have deemed 2012 the year of eating more fruits and vegetables! I admittedly had a weak moment and ordered a “Montel Williams emulsifier/juicer/blender” off the TV!! Not my usual shopping habit…but, might be the key to increasing veggie/fruit consumption in our household. After chatting with a girlfriend who has been using it for a year now and raves about it, I may be onto something.  It’s on its way as you read this – I will update you on my juicer experience before the 60 day trial is over!! Smoothies anyone?

Chicks Can Help: You have likely heard about the unexpected death of Katherine Newman last week on the news.  She was an Oakville Mom of three active boys and a good friend to many, including some of our Chicks. Here is a copy of a letter sent from Katherine’s brother to her friends.  It contains information on how to make a donation to her sons’ trust/education fund in case you feel like helping out.  There has been a little chatter about a memorial walk/run in her honor.  If this comes to be, I’m sure we, a group of mothers, would be please to take part. I will keep my ear to the ground.  Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Dear Friends, we would like to sincerely and with heartfelt gratitude thank all those who have through kindness and caring comforted us in our time of grief. In this time of unfathomable tragedy, your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

Many have been asking how they can best help Katherine’s three boys who are now without both their parents. The family is extremely grateful for this collective outpouring of concern and has set up an Education and Care Fund for the boys.

Those who wish to contribute to helping to rebuild these boys’ lives can make a donation at any Bank of Montreal to Transit # 0006 Account # 3986401 or online at htttp://NewmanBoysTrustFund.ca.

All funds collected will be going directly to securing the well-being and care of young James, Joshua and Thomas.

Again, thank you to family and friends who have expressed their condolences. Though we can never replace the loss of Katherine’s light from our lives, we have three living reminders of the love she brought to us and to this world and for them we will always we endlessly thankful.

Visitation will be at the P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Avenue, Hamilton on Monday January 16, 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday January 17, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with a Prayer Vigil at 8:30 pm. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 11 Wilson Street West, Ancaster on Wednesday January 18 at 11 a.m. with Interment, Resurrection Cemetery, Garner Road, Ancaster.  For additional information: http://www.pxdermodyfuneral.com

New Learn to Run 5km, Triathlon and Swimming: I will wait until the first week of March to begin these programs.  I already have 5-6 ladies waiting for the 5km run pgm! That’s not to say that you cannot join or come back to the group until then.  You are welcome to meet with the rest of the runners and follow the 5km program at your leisure.

I have 3 smalls, 2 mediums, 4 larges, and 3 x-larges in stock).  Sam has a medium, worn once, to sell for 30.00 in case you are interested. Check out the Wasaga Beach Triathlon photos for a peek at the shirts in action.

Races: At the pre-Christmas Social at my house, I asked you to give thought to your “race calendar” for 2012.  In the Upcoming Races link, I have put names beside the races that you intend to do.  I have bullied a few into trying something new…you still have time to contemplate!  Please email me if you have registered for a race, or if I am missing one.  Let’s have some new adventures together!
